Bournemouth University runs a mens and a ladies team, and last year had over 30 players, registered to play Varsity Volleyball in BUCS and Student Cup Competetion. Both squads exceeded expectation with the the Mens Team losing to Loughboro in the BUCS National round of 16, and the Ladies winning the Western Area Conference Cup.
This years mens team will have 10 players from previous Varsity squads, which includes students from Greece, Germany, France, Iran, plus several UK born players. The Captain will be Olly Batt, who has played for Wessex through the Junior system, and now plays for the NVL squad. The Ladies Team will have 12 players from previous Varsity squads, and will include students from Germany, Finland, France, Japan, Holland, and the UK.
Local players include Pheobe Jeffery from Wessex, plus Becka Greentree from Portsmouth who both have played at National League level. Additional players will be recruited to the Team at trials that will be held at the end of September. A number of BU players will play for Wessex in the National league this year, plus players from both squads will join forces with players from Wessex to play in the South West League this year under a BU/Wessex banner. The players are able to train twice a week at Bournemouth University, and also are able to enjoy a strengh and conditioning programme, organised by the BU sports department.
Volleyball has also be recognised as a focus sport at the University, along with Golf, Tennis, and Cricket, which will only develop more links for Volleyball in the Poole and Bournemouth area.
